Local Information
Considered a summer destination for well over a century, the village of Chester has long been a top haven for yatching. For the non-sailing visitor, Chester's quiet streets invite you to explore our shops and galleries. While you are here why not stop by one of our neighbourhood restaurants for a delightful lunch along with a taste of local hospitality.
One of the best ways to view Chester is from the Tancook Island ferry. A 45 minute ferry ride aboard the William G Ernst will give you an entirely different perspective on Chester and the many islands of Mahone Bay (and it’s a bargain at only $5 a round trip!). The ferry departs Chester’s front harbour on a regular schedule and while visiting cars are not permitted on Tancook, the Island is lovely to hike. So lace up your hiking boots and enjoy getting away from the mainland for a few hours.
If the Arts are more to your liking, The Chester Playhouse has a full slate of both theatrical and musical events. For a complete list check their website. In addition to the theatre, many world famous artists call Chester home and their work can be found throughout the Village in various galleries.
Chester’s golf course is one of the most picturesque in the province. Here you can play a round of golf while magnificent yachts sail by just off the water’s edge. Afterwards, why not enjoy a delightful dinner at one of the many local establishments.
The Chester Yacht Club has been an important part of village life for over 150 years and both racing and pleasure yachts can be seen sailing the beautiful waters of Mahone Bay. Today the highlight of the summer racing season is Chester Race Week. This annual event takes place each August and is hailed as the largest fixed keel boat regatta in Canada.
Take a minute to check out our local businesses and services and don’t forget the Chester Municipality site where you will find a listing of events happening in and around the Chester area.
